At Halifax Health our team of Educators are here to answer your questions, teach you best practices and give you the tools you need to help you once you leave the hospital and are home with your newborn. 2018 Parent Education Classes

Understanding Birth Complete and Newborn Care Series

Join us for a four week series to help prepare you for the labor and delivery process. The first three weeks will cover labor and delivery preparations, including discomforts of pregnancy, warning signs, the labor process, comfort techniques, medical procedures, pain control and family centered cesarean births. The last week you will learn how to care for your newborn once home, including Dr. Karp’s Happiest Baby On The Block techniques of how to soothe a fussy baby. This series is led by experienced parent educators Rebecca Sarwi, Labor & Delivery RN, CCE and Patti Hoffman, RN, IBCLC and Certified Happiest Baby Instructor.

Understanding Birth Express and Newborn Care Express Class

Join us for this Sunday afternoon express class for preparations for labor and newborn basics. You will learn how to care for and soothe your newborn, once home, from a certified Happiest Baby On the Block instructor and Certified Childbirth Educator, Kristi Smook, RN.

Breastfeeding Class

If you are choosing to breastfeed your baby you may have a number of questions like, "How do I know if my baby is getting enough?" and "Is breastfeeding really best for my baby?" All of these topics and more are covered in our four hour class led by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants, Ellen Barton, RNC and Susan Bekken, RNC. You will learn positioning techniques, what to expect during the early days of breastfeeding, how to be prepared for breastfeeding at work and also discuss the best products to help during breastfeeding. Please bring a pillow and baby doll (if available) to class.

Safest Baby On The Block

The Safest Place to Have Your Baby presents a comprehensive class for expectant and new parents of how to keep your baby safe. Infant CPR, car seat safety, Shaken Baby Syndrome, how to choose a safe caregiver, Safe Sleep, water safety, poison control and more. This class is led by Certified Safe Baby Trainers and Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians Kaylee Parker, RN and Brittany Torrey, RN. Class size is limited, please register early.

Sibling Celebration 

Sibling Celebration is a fun, interactive program, which provides a special way to introduce the newest addition to your family. Parents and children together learn “what baby does best,” how to change a diaper and we also share the “Bernstein Bears” story of bringing home their new baby. We will also provide a short tour of the Halifax Health - Center for Women & Infant Health at the end of this class and children are encouraged to bring their favorite stuffed animal or doll. This class is intended for parents and their children ages three to 10 years of age and is led by Deanna Oatley,
a postpartum RN.

Breastfeeding Support Groups

An opportunity to meet with a Lactation Consultant, weigh your baby and have real discussions with other moms. This support group meets weekly from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm and is offered at two convenient locations.
