Volunteer Opportunities

Lend a helping hand.

Since 1932, Halifax Health volunteers have provided members of our local community with volunteer and community service opportunities in an effort to support the organization’s dedication to quality healthcare.

Volunteers are tasked with supporting the hospital and its patients; relaying organizational accomplishments and goals to the public, and fundraising for charitable giving programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Halifax Health volunteers play a crucial role in the overall experience each patient and family has during their visit to the hospital. While this responsibility is no easy task, volunteers get a great sense of fulfillment and accomplishment out of helping others in need.

Halifax Health offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for both adults and teenagers (ages 16-18).

Auxilians can work days, evenings, or weekends depending on their individual service assignments.

Volunteers are required to work a minimum of 60 hours per year with many special recognition programs, educational/social events and associated service benefits provided.

Service assignments include:

  • Gift Shop
  • Family Waiting Room
  • Courtesy Cart
  • Information Desk
  • Halifax Health Medical Center – Port Orange
  • Centers for Oncology
  • Arts in Medicine Program
  • Patient Service Rounds
  • Hospice
  • And over 40 other exciting volunteering opportunities

Our volunteers are truly a special group of people, each with a specific purpose and reason for wanting to help others. Every day presents an opportunity to make a difference and Halifax Health is a wonderful place to do just that. We all take great pride in our personal contributions because we get to see firsthand how the work we do benefits every patient and their family members.

During my previous experiences volunteering at other places, I did not feel the same sense of personal connection. At Halifax Health, even the smallest things can make a big difference. From helping a visitor navigate their way around the hospital to knitting booties and hats for newborn babies, there are countless ways to make a lasting impact.

While we do not always interact with patients directly, we get great satisfaction out of knowing that we have played a part in making their visit to Halifax Health an enjoyable one. The level of support and appreciation we get from the Halifax Health nurses, physicians and staff is remarkable.

Being part of an organization that is truly committed to serving our local community is an honor. I am confident that should I ever need medical attention, Halifax Health will be there for me and deliver exceptional service from start to finish using all the latest technology.

Teens 16 years of age and older interested in a career in healthcare, as well as volunteerism, are encouraged to participate in Halifax Health’s See Your Future program. We are excited to offer student volunteers with a variety of opportunities at Halifax Health.

Teens participating in Halifax Health’s See Your Future program will have the opportunity to:

  • Practice interpersonal and soft skills needed for successful employment
  • Tour medical center departments
  • Learn from presentations given by medical and healthcare professionals
  • Receive training in Halifax Health’s teen volunteer program

Tuition assistance is available for students who take part in the program and enroll in Daytona State College pursuing a degree in healthcare.

If you know a teen who would be interested in this program, please have them email their name, email address and/or phone number to seeyourfuture@halifax.org.

Sometimes, the best medicine is a smile. Our therapy dogs provide patients and their families with comfort, hope and healing.

With 22 teams of volunteer handlers and dogs, patients can request a visit from one of their favorite four-legged friends throughout most areas of the hospital, including Oncology and Speediatrics. For health and safety reasons, volunteer handlers and dogs are not permitted to visit patients in surgery.

Our highly-trained team of therapy dogs have received extensive behavioral training and are well-suited for daily interaction with people. Each dog goes through a selection process prior to being accepted. They must possess all of the necessary qualities of a well-rounded therapy dog, including bedside manners, a stable temperament and friendly personality.

After being accepted into the program, each therapy dog is given an official Halifax Health – Auxiliary vest and name tag, signifying that they have been thoroughly vetted for behavior, infection control, hospital policy and identification.

When the therapy dogs and their handlers are on-duty, they are encouraged to socialize and interact with people outside the patient rooms, including staff and visitors. Doing so helps the dogs become more acquainted with their surroundings and feel comfortable in a variety of settings.

If you see one of our therapy dogs during a visit to Halifax Health, they would love to meet you so please feel free to stop them and say hello. Spending time with people is what they do best.

With your continued support and encouragement, the Halifax Health – Auxiliary therapy dog program will continue to thrive for future generations.
