Halifax Health - Family Medicine Residency Program (FMRP) values diversity issues in the education and training of our residents. In keeping with our commitment to graduate exceptionally qualified, well-rounded physicians, we feel that exposure to, and training in diversity issues in healthcare is very important. In addition to providing a Health Disparities Area of Concentration, the program offers a series of lectures on culturally responsive healthcare, social determinants of health and anti-racism efforts in healthcare.

These conferences provide training experiences that explore the influence of cultural factors on medical beliefs and practices, and the effects of personal cultural background on staff relationships and physician-patient interactions. Our community medicine elective provides residents the opportunity to do outreach with underserved groups in our area and residents are given the chance to do QI projects relevant to the underserved populations in our community. As a program, we stand firmly against racism and pledge to work to dismantle inequities in healthcare and society in general.

In our efforts to continue to develop these aspects of our program, we offer 1-2 rotation scholarships to students from underrepresented groups per year and welcome any prospective residents who have an interest in these areas to consider applying. Our program embraces, accepts and promotes diversity with regard to cultural background, sexual orientation, faith background and other social/cultural identities. We strongly encourage students from under-represented groups to apply.

Having a diverse group of residents on staff gives us the ability to treat a broad spectrum of conditions and patient populations with the highest quality care.

Jason Hudgins, DO is a local to the Central Florida area. After attending Lyman High School in Longwood, Fla., he became a manager at Steak n’ Shake while going to business classes at Seminole Community College. He learned that strictly taking care of money was not fulfilling and decided that taking care of people would be much better.

Dr. Hudgins was then accepted to the Radiology program at the Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences, now AdventHealth University. While working alongside physicians, he realized that the only thing coming between him and becoming a physician himself was time and school. He was then accepted to the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine while working as a per-diem X-ray technologist at AdventHealth Apopka.

Keeping X-ray hours at the hospital while attending medical school was demanding, but rewarding due to the experience gained and the tremendous moral support that was offered by co-workers. Jason also helped found the Center for Population Health Research at AdventHealth University with Dr. Russ Butler and will continue to use geographic information systems to increase the overall health for as many people as possible. Over the past six years Jason has been volunteering at Shepard’s Hope, a free clinic in Orlando, and has no plans to stop.

Dr. Hudgins is the first doctor in his extended family but will be followed by his big brother, Adam, as he gets a Ph.D. in genetics next year. Spencer, his younger brother, just turned 15-years old and, along with his big brother, is one of Jason’s favorite people in the world.
