SAVI Treatment Process
The SAVI™ breast brachytherapy applicator is the latest advance in the delivery of radiation therapy for early-stage breast cancer. SAVI uses multiple catheters to precisely target radiation where it is needed most, while minimizing exposure to healthy areas, like the skin or chest wall.
Breast brachytherapy uses radiation to treat the lumpectomy cavity and the surrounding tissue from the inside out. This reduces treatment time from several weeks to just five days. Unlike earlier approaches, SAVI utilizes multiple catheters to deliver radiation, which allows radiation oncologists to customize treatment based on each patient's anatomy. Each catheter independently delivers radiation to the tissue, which enables physicians to direct radiation where it is needed most while minimizing exposure to healthy areas, like the skin or chest wall.
By allowing physicians to customize treatment for each patient, SAVI may increase the number of women who are able to choose APBI as a treatment option. When therapy is individualized, physicians can provide patients with a higher quality of care.
