Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, licensed since 1979, is a respected leader in end-of-life care and an example of compassionate medical service, recognized, reimbursed and regulated under state and federal guidelines. When it opened in 1979, Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler was one of only a handful of hospice programs in the United States. The 17 members of the all-volunteer staff felt strongly that people didn't need to die in a hospital room, alone and in pain.
At the time, hospice operated out of a small office in the Center for Oncology at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
Today, The Hospice of Volusia/Flagler has grown from an average daily census of 35 in 1986 to nearly 600 patients - many of whom are cared for in the home-like setting of the Hospice Care Center in Port Orange. More than 40,000 patients have been served in Volusia and Flagler counties.
Setting Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler apart from other hospice programs are:
- The largest inpatient care center in Central Florida, and a residential care center in Volusia County
