Watch a Live Lap-Band Surgery
Watch as Joel Sebastien, MD, FACS, East Coast Bariatrics Medical Director, performs a laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, better known as a Lap-Band surgery, while Harry Black, MD, FACS, answers audience questions.
Dr. Sebastien is board certified and specializes in the surgical treatment of obesity. He has performed more than 400 laparoscopic bariatric operations.
"This surgery is simply used as a tool in the weight loss process for morbidly obese patients," said Dr. Sebastien. "Our team of professionals will help these patients learn how to use this tool, in conjunction with certain lifestyle changes, for long term success."
During a Lap-Band procedure, surgeons use small incisions and long-shafted instruments to implant an inflatable silicone band into the patient's abdomen. The band is fastened around the upper stomach to create a new, tiny stomach pouch that limits and controls the amount of food you eat. It also creates a small outlet that slows the emptying process into the stomach and the intestines. As a result, patients experience an earlier sensation of fullness and are satisfied with smaller amounts of food. In turn, this results in weight loss.
