Volunteers

The Hospice of Volusia/Flagler began as an all-volunteer organization in 1979, serving 60 patients in its first year. Today, teams of professional staff and trained volunteers serve 600 patients each day.

The positive feelings our volunteers receive from the work they do with our patients and families are unlike any other experience. Volunteer orientation consists of interactive sessions with our staff and volunteers. The 21 hours of classroom studies focus on: end-of-life issues, active listening skills, the Hospice team concept, how Hospice cares for patients, and ways to support the patient’s family.

A wide variety of volunteer opportunities exist at The Hospice of Volusia/Flagler. They include:

Patient/Family Volunteers who read to patients, write letters for them, do a life review or simply sit quietly offering companionship and a caring presence.

Administrative/Clerical Volunteers assist departments with office duties such as mailings, data entry, telephone answering, and filing.

Bereavement Volunteers provide support to those who have had a family member or friend die. They assist staff with memorial services, administrative duties or bereavement telephone calls. They also assist at both Children’s Grief Center in East and West Volusia County.

Community Outreach Volunteers staff information tables at health fairs and events throughout the community.

Culinary Volunteers prepare nutritious and appealing “home-cooked” meals for patients in the Hospice Care Centers and the Hospice House, and also work in the Hospice Café in Port Orange assisting in meal preparation for staff, visitors, and volunteers.

Fund Development/Special Events Volunteers assist the staff at fundraisers and special events such as the annual 5K Run/Walk, Tree of Remembrance, and Golf Festival.

Resale Shop Volunteers help staff with sorting and pricing donated items, arranging merchandise, and cashiering.

Teen Volunteers who are high school students incorporate volunteering into their educational experience and gain community service hours for their participation.

Guardian Angel Volunteers sit at the bedside of patients who may otherwise be alone at the end of their lives. These Angels are needed in nursing homes, Hospice Care Centers, and the Hospice House.
