Resident Selection & Eligibility
The success and quality of the Halifax Health-General Surgery Residency Program rests on its ability to attract and "match" applicants who will benefit from our educational opportunities and will, in turn, help further our mission of training and patient care.
Resident selection: General issues
Resident selection will be made from among eligible applicants on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. Halifax Health General Surgery Residency values diversity and does not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or veteran status. Our residency will participate in the National Residency Matching Program and abide by its rules and regulations. As all residents beginning their PGY1 year are selected through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP), applicants must be NRMP eligible by the time the ranking lists are closed. All applicants applying for PGY1 positions beginning on July 1st must submit their applications through the Electronic Residency Applications System (ERAS).
