General Surgery Residency
The Surgery Residency Team at Halifax Health in Daytona Beach, Florida is excited to be starting a new program. We are formulating teams to care for patients in a disease centered format; we are building these teams and processes so that the patient is truly first. We believe in continuous quality improvement that can be accomplished with the diverse teams we have assembled.
We have two categorical positions at each year; there are no preliminary slots at this time. There are currently no fellowships in the surgical specialties in our program.
We are located in a medium metropolitan area in subtropical Florida, at the beach. The major inpatient experience is at Halifax Health, a 940 bed Medical Center with a level II trauma center that receives over 450 trauma alerts per year, and over 2000 trauma-related admissions. The program also participates with an outpatient surgery facility that demonstrates a private practice model of care. The only off-campus training occurs at Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando, where the Pediatric Surgery experience is gained in the second and fourth years.
As this is a new program, you will be able to shape the experience for those to follow. Not only the general surgeons, but the specialists with whom you will rotate are enthusiastic about your arrival, and to begin your graduate medical education.
The only other residency at the facility is a long-standing Family Medicine program with 24 residents, and a Sports Medicine Fellowship with a single Fellow. We are including these residents to rotate on the teams so that all learners experience system-based practice. We also have an affiliation with Florida State University, and participate in educating third and fourth year medical students at the Daytona Beach Campus. There are currently 41 students on the Daytona Beach campus. We routinely rank the students’ favorite rotation according to their exposure to our vast clinical material and enthusiastic faculty, which are the same faculty that will engage you.
The surgeons currently meet weekly with other members, including administrators, engineers, a psychologist (and former patient), and patient care specialists who form the core team members. We function more efficiently together as a true team.
