Melissa Chan

Melissa attended Scripps College, a women's liberal arts college in Claremont, California, where she majored in art history with emphasis in Italian Baroque and Renaissance period. She studied and lived in Italy while working under some of the world renown Da Vinci and other well-known art historians. She was granted special access to many European landmarks including St. Peter's Basilica.

Melissa is a classically trained artist and is still commissioned for works of art today. Her works have won recognition and been displayed in various art shows, including a feature in a European art gallery.

In college, she was a coordinator of volunteer services and volunteered in a nursing and rehabilitation center for four years. She was also a makeup artist for a production company in Los Angeles. She used her skills as the art director in an Southern Californian elementary school for at-risk youth. She was a recipient of the Mellon Grant for a successful speaking series entitled "Linking Laboratories and Studios."

Melissa has invaluable experience in every step of the research process due to working over the span of five years as a research assistant for the University of Utah's Burn Center before and during medical school. She attended University of Utah's School of Medicine where she was able to outreach and mentor countless women as the co-president of American Medical Women's Association. Also during her time there, she utilized her compassion for other cultures working as a resident advisor to international graduate students.

Her interests include batik silk painting, musical instruments (piano, oboe, & bagpipes), languages (French, Italian, Cantonese, & Samoan), surfing, kayaking, world travel, and spending time with her dog, Toby.
