Daytona Beach, FL - 4.25.07

Halifax Community Health System commemorates the construction of the new 10-story inpatient North Tower and Emergency Department at Halifax Medical Center with a Groundbreaking Celebration today. Governor Charlie Crist is the keynote speaker for the celebration. Governor Crist will be joined by health system, city and county officials.

The Groundbreaking Celebration features demolition by the “terminator,” a flyover by the Spruce Creek Gaggle Flight, music provided by the Mainland High School Drumline, as well as a digital preview and model of the new North Tower.

“Halifax Community Health System is setting a great example for other communities with this extraordinary expansion,” said Governor Charlie Crist. “The new North Tower and Emergency Department will greatly enhance the medical center. Today’s event truly deserves to be applauded and celebrated.”

The new 10-story inpatient tower will add 180 beds to the campus and approximately 500,000 square feet. The new tower will be located northwest of the existing Emergency Department and feature all private patient rooms and increased family space including a family resource area.

The new Emergency Department will be four times greater than the existing facility with more than double the number of treatment rooms. Of the 107 new treatment rooms, 96 will be modular in design to meet patient demand and needs, eight will be dedicated psychiatric rooms and three will be designated as trauma resuscitation rooms.

Halifax Medical Center Welcomes Surgical Director for Center for Transplant Services

Gary Wilson, MC, FACS joins Halifax Medical Center staff

Daytona Beach, FL - 4.23.07

Halifax Medical Center announced today that Gary Wilson, MD, FACS, will join its Center for Transplant Services as Surgical Director.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Wilson to our Center for Transplant Services,” said Dan Lang, Halifax Medical Center Administrator. “He brings outstanding experience and knowledge to our facility. This addition will enhance our ability to provide high-quality healthcare and meet the needs of our community by offering East Central Florida’s only kidney transplant program.”

Wilson, who is scheduled to join the program in July, is a multi-organ transplant surgeon with over 15 years of experience. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners.

“Having been in the transplantation field for many years and involved with other transplant program start-ups, I am excited about the opportunity not only for myself professionally, but to provide this service for the people of Volusia County and the surrounding areas,” said Wilson. “Area residents have had limited access to a kidney transplant service in the past because of the geographical distance to a program and hopefully that will not be an issue any longer. It will help relieve the strain on patients as well as their families.”

After receiving his undergraduate degree from Miami University (Ohio), Wilson completed his fellowship in transplantation at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. During his medical tenure, he has held numerous academic and clinical appointments including Director of Pancreas Transplantation at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and Director of Extra-Renal Transplantation at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA.

The Agency for Health Care Administration announced its approval of a Certificate of Need to establish an adult kidney transplant program at Halifax Medical Center on February 24, 2006. Sajid Latif, MD, has assumed the role of medical director. Dr. Latif has been a member of the Halifax Medical Staff since 1997 and is a partner at Nephrology Consultants, Daytona Beach. He is board certified in nephrology and internal medicine.

The Center for Transplant Services at Halifax Medical Center will provide care for patients within the local Organ Procurement Organization’s (OPO) 10-county service area which includes Volusia, Orange, Osceola, Brevard, Seminole, Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, Saint Lucie and Lake Counties. The closure of Bert Fish Medical Center’s kidney transplant program left the local OPO with only one kidney transplant program located in Orange County.

Halifax Community Health System
Ranked among top five percent of all hospitals in the nation for clinical outcomes, Halifax Community Health System serves East Central Florida and provides a continuum of healthcare services through a network of organizations including a tertiary hospital, a community hospital, psychiatric services, a cancer treatment center with four outreach locations, the area’s largest hospice, a health maintenance organization, and a preferred provider organization.
