New Surgical Weight-Loss Options at Halifax Health

For people who are severely overweight or obese and haven’t been able to lose weight through diet and exercise, bariatric surgery may be the solution. Surgeons at Halifax Health perform the most advanced bariatric procedures available.

StomaphyX

One type of weight-loss surgery — the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure — involves creating a new stomach pouch. Since the new pouch is smaller, it can’t hold large amounts of food. This helps people lose weight.

In some people, however, the new pouch stretches over time. Then, a corrective procedure — StomaphyX surgery — may be needed to help patients maintain weight loss.

During StomaphyX, the loose stomach tissue is fastened together. The procedure is minimally invasive and involves:

  • No incisions
  • No anesthesia
  • No overnight hospital stay
Many people recover quickly and can return to work the next day. Halifax Health is the only hospital in East Central Florida currently offering StomaphyX surgery.

Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy

A vertical sleeve gastrectomy works by reducing the amount of food you can eat. The stomach continues to function normally — but more than 85 percent of it is removed.

Unlike bypass procedures, a vertical sleeve gastrectomy reduces the risk for complications including intestinal blockages, ulcers and deficiency in some nutrients. The procedure is ideal for people who are severely obese. It’s also recommended for those with anemia, Crohn’s disease and certain other conditions.
