Smart Living May Lower Prostate Cancer Risks

About one in six men will get prostate cancer. But research shows these tips can reduce the risk:

  • Trim the fat. Eating a lot of fat — particularly from animal sources — has been linked to a higher risk for prostate cancer.
  • Pack your diet with nutrients. Some research has suggested that vitamin E and selenium, a mineral, might lower a man’s prostate cancer risk. Vitamin E is found in vegetables, nuts and egg yolks. Selenium is found in rice, wheat and seafood.
  • Be fit. Aim to exercise for 45 to 60 minutes on five or more days of the week. Try walking briskly, mowing the lawn, jogging or playing basketball.
  • Manage metabolic syndrome. This syndrome refers to a group of risk factors, including being overweight, carrying extra fat around the waist and having high blood sugar. Together, they more than double the chances of developing prostate cancer. On the flip side, lifestyle habits like exercising and eating right can prevent metabolic syndrome.
