Protect Your Heart with a
Low-Fat Diet

Foods high in fat can increase your blood cholesterol. High blood cholesterol, in turn, can make you more likely to suffer heart disease or a heart attack. To protect your heart, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables; grains such as rice, pasta, cereals and breads; fat-free and low-fat dairy products; peas and beans; skinless poultry; and lean meat, especially cuts marked loin or round. Avoid rich sauces and gravies; salad dressing; sweets, including cookies, doughnuts and cakes; fried foods such as potato chips and French fries; whole-milk products; egg yolks; sausages and hot dogs.
