Struggling to Lose Weight?

Learn Lifestyle Changes that Could Help

Diane Allen, Program Coordinator of the Lighter Lifestyles Weight Management Program, helps people get healthy while losing weight.
Weight management: It’s a challenge that affects people of all ages and backgrounds. Halifax Health’s Lighter Lifestyles Weight Management Program can help by teaching patients new lifestyle skills that address their weight while improving their health.

Help from Medical Experts

Unlike commercial weight-loss programs, Lighter Lifestyles takes a medical approach. Participants work with a hospital-based team that includes:
  • A physician
  • Registered dietitians
  • Exercise physiologists
  • A social worker
“This team approach to weight management offers many perspectives on becoming healthy,” said Diane Allen, Program Coordinator. “We focus on education, and all programs are medically supervised. We get a wide range of people with a variety of health limitations, and we can address those in a safe environment.”

Offering Structure and Support

There are several diet plan options for patients, but each one stresses exercise and monitors a patient’s physical activity. It is an integral part of the process that is emphasized throughout the program.

“There’s an accountability involved with coming in every week for classes and meetings,” said Allen. “It’s great for people who need structure and support.”

Most adult patients participate in a group setting, while the pediatric program works with patients individually. Lighter Lifestyles also offers a maintenance program, so patients who have reached their goals can still get help and support.

“This is about making a lifestyle change,” said Allen.
