Halifax Health Offers Area’s Only Kidney Transplant Center
Last October, Halifax Health opened
East Central Florida’s only transplant
center, which currently performs
kidney transplants. In the near future, the
center will have pancreatic transplant
capabilities, as well. The center provides
kidney patients — as well as their families
— access to the high-quality healthcare and
support they need in a convenient location.
A kidney transplant can help patients with kidney failure:
- Experience life without dialysis treatments
- Enjoy better long-term health
- Return to normal activities
Halifax Health — Center for Transplant Services is one of only eight active kidney transplant programs in the state of Florida. Halifax Health Medical Center is Joint Commission accredited, a member of the United Network for Organ Sharing, and certified by both the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Agency for Healthcare Administration.
Expert Staff
The center is staffed by a multidisciplinary team that includes a surgeon, a nephrologist, clinical coordinators, a financial coordinator, a social worker, a dietitian and a pharmacist. Nurses are available around the clock to answer questions for patients on the waiting list for transplants, living donors and post-transplant patients.Gary Wilson, MD, FACS, a boardcertified, multi-organ transplant surgeon, serves as Surgical Director. He has 22 years of experience in the field of transplantation. Sajid Latif, MD, board certified in both internal medicine and nephrology, serves as the center’s Medical Director and has many years of experience coordinating transplant recipient care.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
At Halifax Health — Center for Transplant Services, surgery may be performed on living donors using minimally invasive or laparoscopic methods. This can mean less pain and a shorter hospital stay for the donor. The center has a newly remodeled, relaxing environment. For the patients’ convenience, radiology and lab services are available onsite.
