Some Healthy-Skin Habits
for People with Diabetes
Some skin disorders — such as infections and itching — can
trouble anyone. But they’re likelier to afflict diabetes sufferers.
Other skin problems, such as diabetic blisters, specifically threaten
people whose diabetes is uncontrolled.
To keep your skin healthy:
- Keep a tight rein on your blood sugar levels. Not doing so can lead to dry skin and reduce your bacteria-fighting ability.
- Bathe or shower in lukewarm — not hot — water to help prevent dry skin. In addition, avoid feminine-hygiene sprays, bubble baths, and deodorant soaps — all of which are drying.
- Every day, check your feet for blisters, redness, calluses, sores and cuts. Tell your doctor about any foot problems immediately. And have a yearly foot exam.
- Treat even minor cuts right away by washing with soap and water. Use an antibiotic cream or ointment only if your doctor advises it.
- Wear seamless socks and roomy, well-fitting shoes.
