Area’s Only Comprehensive Stroke Center
Halifax Health Medical Center was the first hospital in Florida and is the only one in Volusia/Flagler County designated by the Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. This means Halifax Health Medical Center is uniquely equipped to offer stroke victims the quick assessment and care they need. “Our team makes sure patients get the right treatment to minimize a stroke’s impact on future function and increase survival rates,” Tellis said.As a Comprehensive Stroke Center, Halifax Health Medical Center offers:
- Neurosurgeons and neurologists on call 24/7
- The area’s only interventional neuroradiologists
- Advanced imaging capabilities
- Minimally invasive treatment techniques employed from inside the blood vessel
- A dedicated neurological intensive care unit
“We can go further in terms of treatment, thanks to the expertise of our physicians and our advanced technology,” Tellis said. “We have increased capabilities to treat stroke from inside the blood vessel, and even after time has elapsed.”
Innovative Technology
“Over the past 10 years, the science of treating stroke has improved enormously,” said David Turetsky, MD, an interventional neuroradiologist.Dr. Turetsky works closely with Halifax Health’s neurologists and neurosurgeons to employ the latest and most effective methods to fix vascular problems and restore blood flow. One innovative tool that he uses is the Merci® Catheter, which enables him to quickly remove blood clots from cerebral vessels. These devices may be used alone or in combination with powerful, clot-busting drugs.
“We’re extremely pleased to be able to offer this kind of advanced care in East Central Florida,” Tellis added.
