Breaking Ground:
Halifax Health’s New North Tower

Halifax Health is continuing to meet the needs of our community by building a new inpatient North Tower and Emergency Department at Halifax Health Medical Center.

The new 10-story tower will add 180 rooms to the campus and approximately 500,000 square feet. It will be located northwest of the existing Emergency Department and feature all private patient rooms, a family resource area and more space for visitors.

The new Emergency Department will:

  • Be the largest in the state, and four times larger than our existing facility
  • Add 107 new treatment rooms, more than doubling the current number
  • Include a Chest Pain Center and a rapid admissions unit

Of the new treatment rooms, 96 will be modular in design, eight will be dedicated psychiatric rooms and three will be designated as trauma resuscitation rooms.

In addition to the North Tower itself, Halifax Health is adding 650,000 square feet of surface parking to the Halifax Health Medical Center campus.

A Topping Off celebration is expected this spring to mark the completion of the highest structural point in the building. The North Tower is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2009.

Did You Know?

More than 50 percent of the construction contracts for the North Tower have been awarded to Central Florida contractors and suppliers, and more than 20 percent of those are Volusia County vendors.
